\"IMG_3865\"<\/a>The final meeting of the Society is traditionally not a tasting, but a Christmas celebration during which good food and wine is enjoyed, but not marked.\u00a0\u00a0 This year was no exception to this enjoyment and the event was held at the J\u00e1vea Parador, the first time the Society has met there since 2007.\u00a0\u00a0 The meal was not a traditional Christmas Dinner, but reflected another Society tradition of a choice between fish and meat for the main course.\u00a0\u00a0 The wines enjoyed with the meal were:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0White<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Paco y Lola 2012, Alvarinho, from the DO, Rias Baixas from the Rosalia de Castro Winery and is made from 100% Albari\u00f1o.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Red<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Vizcarra Senda del Oro 2012, a \u201cRoble\u201d from the Ribera del\u00a0Duero, the region \u00a0which the society will be visiting next year<\/span><\/a>. It is a 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from organic vineyards.<\/span><\/p>\n

The above two wines were drunk with the selection of tapas starters. \u00a0 With the main course members were treated to:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Red <\/strong>– Vera De Estenas Magnum Reserva 2006 a blend of Cabernet Suvignon, Bobal, Merlot and Tempranillo from Utiel Requena \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>To accompany the dessert was Iberia Romate, a\u00a0classic \u201ccream\u201d from Jerez. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>It is also at this function at which the prizes for Wine Taster of the Year<\/strong>, based on the previous nine tastings held in the year, are presented.\u00a0\u00a0 To be eligible for this award, members have to have attended at least five tastings and the more you attend the more difficult it is to maintain the quality of one\u2019s scores.\u00a0\u00a0 For more information on the scoring system go to the section on \u201cTasting\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span> on this web site.\u00a0 This year\u2019s prize winners were:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>1st<\/sup> Andrew Johnson,<\/b> our current President, who achieved an excellent score of \u00a0 \u00a093% based on his 8 tastings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>3rd<\/sup> was shared between Renate Pluis <\/b>(90% for 9 tastings) and Per Ramvall <\/b>(90% \u00a0for 6 tastings)<\/span><\/p>\n

Definitely a President\u2019s Benefit!\u00a0\u00a0 The prizes were presented by Gordon Sellars the Vice President.<\/span><\/p>\n

After this presentation President Andrew Johnson then presented some of his own personal awards, again another tradition of the Society at this event. The recipients had all attended the 9 tastings throughout the year. \u00a0 They were, Pat and Keith Pacey, Hugh and Gillian Epsom and Penny Floodgate. \u00a0 In addition the President recognised and presented a prize to Sandy Fawle, who although not on the committee had worked tirelessly on the table arrangements and layout for each meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally the President closed the event by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year<\/span><\/p>\n
