{"id":5424,"date":"2017-10-12T10:28:23","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T10:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/?p=5424"},"modified":"2017-10-12T10:30:45","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T10:30:45","slug":"wine-trip-to-requena-45-october-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wine-trip-to-requena-45-october-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Wine trip to Requena 4\/5 October 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 4th October 27 members departed Javea at 8.45am prompt for the town of Requena.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3478\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4688\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4688\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3478.jpg\" alt=\"img_3478\" width=\"352\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3471\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4687\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4687\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3471.jpg\" alt=\"img_3471\" width=\"350\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>Arriving at <strong>Bodega Vegalfaro<\/strong> we were greeted by Rodolfo, the son of Andres Valiente who built the Bodega in 1999.\u00a0 In February 2011 it received the qualification Pago\u00a0 .The 60 hectares of vineyards are situated on a slope in the valley of the Jucar river.\u00a0 The area is divided into three due to the quality of soil, the microclimate and the grape varieties of Merlot, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Garnache, Syrah and Bobal.\u00a0 This\u00a0 area is particularly well known for growing Bobal. \u00a0The grapes for the Pago wines are grown in a special area surrounded by pine forests, holm oaks and aromatic plants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3480\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4690\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4690\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3480.jpg\" alt=\"img_3480\" width=\"584\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a>Pesticides are never used, so the soil is alive. It proliferates a micro-fauna very important to the decomposition of organic material and nutrient absorption by the vines through a \u201csymbiotic relationships\u201d with the roots, while helping to control diseases. \u00a0After the grapes are picked, early in the morning, they are processed separately according to variety as well as the area in which they were grown, anything from 600-900m above sea level.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3483\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4691\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4691\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3483.jpg\" alt=\"img_3483\" width=\"597\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a>We were particularly interested to see the cooling system, a new design, which is able to reduce the temperature of the wine in the vats very quickly to aid the fermentation process. Above 32C the yeast is killed. This year the wine is expected to be an excellent quality. The grapes are healthy with good colour and there has been the right amount of rain at the right times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3489\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4698\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4698\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3489.jpg\" alt=\"img_3489\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3489.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3489-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3489-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a>Oak barrels from French and Central European forests are used for the ageing. \u00a0French Barrels of 225ltrs cost 800\u20ac and Hungarian are 600\u20ac, they are only used for 4-5yrs. To further improve quality, recently they have been doing research into the ageing of red wines in terracotta amphorae. Before bottling the wine goes through a micro filter to remove bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cava is matured in the bottle with the lees. \u00a09mths produces Cava, 15mths for Reserva and 30mths for Gran Reserva.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3496\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4701\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4701\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3496.jpg\" alt=\"img_3496\" width=\"480\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3496.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3496-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3496-400x226.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With a delightful tapas lunch we tasted 6 of their wines:<\/p>\n<p>Caprasia Rose at 6\u20ac<\/p>\n<p>Caprasia Bobal Crianza 50% aged in ceramic\u00a0 at 12\u20acBright and salmon tone typical of the non maceration with the skins, with a strong perfume.<\/p>\n<p>Caprasia Roble 2015\u00a0 at 7.50\u20ac. \u00a0\u00a0Dark black \u00a0 \u00a0 cherry hue with good intense nose and predominant strong red fruits.<\/p>\n<p>Rebel-lia Blanco\u00a0 2015\u00a0 chardonnay 60% sauvignon blanc 40%\u00a0 at 6\u20ac. \u00a0\u00a0Shiny straw,\u00a0 good\u00a0 intensity with\u00a0 notes of tropical\u00a0 fruits and flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Pago de los Balagueses Syrah\u00a0\u00a0 2013\u00a0 at 15\u20ac. \u00a0\u00a0Intense black cherry colour with purple glints. Aromatic hints of fennel and aniseed fused with ripe cherries.<\/p>\n<p>Cava Caprasia Brut Nature\u00a0 2013\u00a0 chardonnay 60% macabeo40%\u00a0 at 15\u20ac. \u00a0\u00a0Bright, clean, straw-yellow colour with subtle green flashes and fine, intense bubbles that form beads . Intense black cherry colour and good intensity on the nose. The palate is fresh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3523\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4703\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4703\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3523.jpg\" alt=\"img_3523\" width=\"562\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3524\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4704\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4704\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3524.jpg\" alt=\"img_3524\" width=\"557\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our Hotel for the night was in the plaza in old oldest part of Requena.\u00a0 Some buildings have been renovated but there are still many awaiting attention.\u00a0 We visited the C15th Tower by the Moorish walls and the caves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3583\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4718\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4718\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3583.jpg\" alt=\"img_3583\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3583.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3583-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3583-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a>The caves were dug from the clay beneath the rock in the C9-13th.\u00a0 They were used\u00a0 as storage for food,wine and grain, as a shelter and as a burial place.\u00a0 They extend under many of the properties as well as the main Plaza and are often interconnected. they contain amphorae and storage jars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3611\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4719\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4719\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3611.jpg\" alt=\"img_3611\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3611.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3611-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3611-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3591\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4721\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4721\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3591.jpg\" alt=\"img_3591\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3591.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3591-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3591-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a>Dinner that evening was taken at the Hostelry opposite so we didn&#8217;t have far to walk!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next morning, we were soon\u00a0 off to the first tasting at <strong>Bodegas Emilio Clemente<\/strong>.\u00a0 It belongs to the 3rd generation of the Lujan family and we were all impressed by its beauty. The late C19th Manor has been restored using old materials in keeping with the style of the property.\u00a0 Christina the winemaker greeted us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3621\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4732\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4732\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3621.jpg\" alt=\"img_3621\" width=\"548\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><a everyone, which was very welcome!\u00a0 This bodega produces 200,000 bottles a year of which about 90% is exported to the Far East.\u00a0\u00a0 The chardonnay and\u00a0 bobal are grown 300m above sea level in an area with boar and wild flowers.\u00a0 When the boar start to eat the grapes in August\u00a0 they know they are ready for picking by hand during the night.\u00a0 Merlot, sauvignon blanc and tempranillo are picked by machine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3635\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4746\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4746\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3635.jpg\" alt=\"img_3635\" that she could eat her food off the floor and it was certainly outstanding in its cleanliness and attention to detail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>420 French oak barrels are used with a medium toast to give a sweet spicy finish.\u00a0 Classical music from Liszt, Mozart Beethoven and Handel played in the barrel room,\u00a0 the slow constant vibrations were believed\u00a0 improve the wine.<\/p>\n<p>We tasted four wines,\u00a0 the cava is in its first year of production:<\/p>\n<p>Cava brut Regulus\u00a0 macabeo 50% chardonnay 50% at 4\u20ac<\/p>\n<p>Florante\u00a0 tardana 6% macabeo20% sauvignon blanc 20% chardonnay 54% at 5.50\u20ac<\/p>\n<p>Bomelot crianza\u00a0\u00a0 bobal 50% merlot 50% at 4.50\u20ac<\/p>\n<p>Emilio Clemente crianza\u00a0 cabernet sauvignon 52% merlot 48% at 7\u20ac<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bodegas Hispaosuizas<\/strong>\u00a0 formed in 1905 and restored in 2009 was the last tasting and what a superb visit it was.\u00a0 Rafa one of the owners was our very knowledgeable guide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3734\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4754\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4754\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3734.jpg\" alt=\"img_3734\" width=\"554\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3685\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4755\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4755\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3685.jpg\" alt=\"img_3685\" width=\"558\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a>The vineyard extends to 61 hectares and only the best grapes are selected and picked by hand, which takes 15 people a week,\u00a0 the lower quality are collected by machine in four hours and sold on to other wineries.\u00a0 A microclimate enables them to grow French vines by adapting the rootstock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3692\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4762\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4762\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3692.jpg\" alt=\"img_3692\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" flow as space is quite limited and also to prevent the pips imparting bitterness into the wine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/requena-45-october-2016\/img_3699\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4765\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4765\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3699.jpg\" alt=\"img_3699\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3699.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3699-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.cbws.eu\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3699-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a>Open topped oak barrels of 225ltrs are used for the maceration, the grapes are stirred three times a day by hand.\u00a0 The barrels are later used for the storage of the same wine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The varieties used are chardonnay,\u00a0 pinot noir, sauvignon blanc and bobal.<\/p>\n<p>Four of their wines have been declared the best in Spain in the 2015 Wine Guide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We tasted three delicious wines:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Impromtu Sauvignon Blanc at 19\u20ac<\/p>\n<p>Cava Roasda Tantum Ergo\u00a0 97points\u00a0 pinot noir\u00a0 at 20.50\u20ac<\/p>\n<p>Bassus Pinot Noir\u00a0
