74 Members and guests gathered at the Restaurant Puerto Blanco to listen to members Andrew and Kathy Johnson present their Monovarietal Evening.\u00a0\u00a0 In my absence, Vice President, Maureen Holliday, welcomed members and guests, introduced the speakers and conducted the evening\u2019s proceedings. Andrew outlined the form of the tasting, by announcing that we would taste five very different grape varieties, albeit two were Tempranillo and coming from four different Denominaci\u00f3n de Origen (DO).\u00a0\u00a0 Two of these were from Rioja, but neither typical of what we think of as Rioja wine.\u00a0\u00a0 Two of the grape varieties he surmised would be new to us and finally a desert wine made from a grape variety that we do not normally think of in that context. September Tasting<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am pleased to advise you that we have secured John Davis, a UK Wine Expert, to present the September tasting. You may remember John\u2019s excellent presentation in Puerto Blanco in June 2017. This will be very informative and a good start to the autumn season.\u00a0 More details will follow in the next Newsletter which will be circulated towards the end of August.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Autumn Wine Trip<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>The Wine Trip Team have just completed a recce for the Autumn Wine Trip which will leave J\u00e1vea on the morning of Thursday 4th October and return early evening on Friday 5th.\u00a0 \u00a0The trip will be in the DO Alicante in the Medio and Alto Vinalop\u00f3 district around Pinoso.\u00a0\u00a0 During the 2 day visit we will be visiting 3 bodegas each one offering something different.\u00a0\u00a0 We will be staying in the interesting town of Biar which boasts a beautiful castle and twisting narrow streets.\u00a0\u00a0 The hotel is Villa de Biar a comfortable 4 Star hotel situated in the centre of the town with a pool and pleasant gardens. Treasurer <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Some of you may know that our current Treasurer Shirley Sloggie will be giving up her role as Treasurer at the AGM in January after 4 years\u00a0of outstanding work. During that time Shirley has worked to simplify this job to ensure that her successor will be able to easily take on the role. We are therefore asking all our members to consider helping us and stepping into this position. All that is required is a basic knowledge of using an Excel spreadsheet.\u00a0 You will be working closely with the Committee as part of a team and Shirley will be on hand for any help and advice.<\/span><\/p>\n

More detail of what is involved will be circulated after the summer break. Please give serious thought to becoming part of the lively CBWS team. Venues and Menus Team<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

After several years dedicated work in this very important area of CBWS Colin and Sue will be giving up this post during next year. As we all know the location and quality of food at our tastings is key to a successful evening.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Sue and Colin have developed an efficient system with each restaurant providing clear guidelines for them to follow. Sue and Colin will be delighted to speak with any member or team who are interested in taking on this role. Once again the Committee will support and help in this important function.
