Newsletter October 2022

Dear Members

Las Rotas October 2019Firstly some sad news.  Keith Pacey, a long term member and Past President of CBWS, passed away suddenly last Friday after a heart-attack.  He was enjoying a lunch with friends and after lunch became unwell and was admitted to Denia Hospital where he peacefully passed away.

Keith was due to celebrate his 90th Birthday in November and many of us saw him at our last tasting at Puerto Blanco where he was in good form.  He was one of the most knowledgeable members on Spanish Wines and had a reputation for presenting without notes in a very interesting way.  Keith was always supportive to the Presidents who served over the years, always offering guidance and friendship.  Our thoughts and sympathies are with Pat and the family at this time.

His funeral will take place this Tuesday, September 27 at Javea Tanatorio at 5.00 pm and you are all welcome to attend.

Now to our October Newsletter. We started our September tasting in the beautiful setting of Puerto Blanco, Calpe, and the evening was hosted by Andrew and Kathy Johnson where 54 people enjoyed wines under the heading of Past Presidents Partners Preferences. Please read the full report by clicking here for the Webpage.

Next Wine Tasting – Thursday, October 20, La Senia, Denia

This month’s tasting will be held at Restaurante La Senia in Denia. Tasting Team members Hugh & Gillian Epsom, together with Neville Richardson, will be offering a light-hearted evening of “Whose Wine is it Anyway?” If you have not attended one of these evenings it is great fun and generates a lot of discussion with fellow members as well as tasting some nice wines.

Can you tell truth from fiction? Would Gillian or any of these three lie to you?

Whose Wine Is It Anyway is a blind tasting with three descriptions of each wine – up to you to choose the correct one! It’s a team effort, with a prize for the table with the most correct answers. Hugh, Gillian and Neville look forward to trying to deceive you!The menu is below. We would ask you to book with Penny Floodgate giving her your choice of main course. Please note that your welcome cava will be served at 7.30 pm.  If you wish to have a drink before this time it must be paid for at the bar.

Thursday 17th November – Los Amigos, Javea

A prestigious bodega from DO Montsant and DO Priorat has agreed to present their wines to us.  The owner, Albert, is a wine innovator producing some interesting wines.  As many of you could not attend the recent Wine Trip this is a good opportunity to enjoy his wines.  Albert is very excited to visit CBWS.  You will find that his story of the 4 bodegas which he owns is very interesting.  Guests are welcome.

Thursday 8th December – A Bordo, Javea – Members Only

Christmas Tasting which is the President’s choice of wines.

Please make a note in your diaries of these important dates.
